THE BEATING HEARTS OF IMPRESSIONNISM - Exhibition on Impressionism

Projecting onto canvas the pleasure of fleeting feelings, the perpetual movement of nature. To split the visual field. Forget the eye, educated by academic art, in favour of the heart.

This is the path taken by Edouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Johan Jongkind, Charles François Daubigny, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Edgard Degas, Berthe Morisot, Gustave Caillebot, Alfred Sisley, Eugène Boudin, Paul Cezanne, Joaquin Sorolla, James Whistler...

It's no longer a question of working in a studio, but of creating by yourself. outdoor school. The work extends beyond the frame.

On 15 April 1874, in the studio of the famous Lyon photographer Félix Tournachon, nicknamed Nadar,  Impression, rising sun by Claude Monet was presented to the press and public.

Impression, Rising Sun. Oil on canvas. Claude Monet. 1872. Le Havre.

Impressionism vibrates with its virgin vision, its new colour palettes, its mental autonomy, unbound by any intellectual or cultural ties. This step would lead the world towards Modern Art, right up to the greatest painter of the 20th century: Pablo Picasso.

The exhibition LES CŒURS BATTANTS DE L'IMPRESSIONNISME (THE BEATING HEARTS OF IMPRESSIONISM) features around a hundred photographs with commentary, reproductions of major works by the main Impressionists and, for the preview of this exhibition at the Espace Hôtel de Lagoy, original works including Sunset at the edge of Le Havre by Eugène Boudin.

A film will be shown in one of the rooms at the Hôtel de Lagoy.

An educational pack, available for school groups to prepare their visit, can be downloaded from the website.

Au Jardin, Claude Monet. 1875.

The Grenouillère by Auguste Renoir. Oil on canvas. 1869.

Boat in the flood at Port Marly. Oil on canvas. 1876. Alfred Sisley.
